Welcome to the European Seas Observatory web portal of ESONET and EMSO projects

ESONET NoE and EMSO PP are two projects dedicated to deep sea observatories implementation in European seas. They are co-funded by the European Commission in the framework programme FP6 and FP7 respectively.

European Seas Observatory Network of Excellence (ESONET NoE)

ESONET is a Network of Excellence, launched in March 2007 for 4 years, with the main objective of integrating a community around and in 12 European sites, federating science, know-how and methods. This community will define what should be an ESONET observatories regarding standardisation issues for instance. ESONET NoE is coordinated by IFREMER (France) http://www.esonet-noe.org.

European Multidisciplinary Seafloor Observation - Preparatory Phase (EMSO PP)

EMSO PP is an infrastructure project, launched in April 2008 for 4 years with the main objective of establishing the legal and governance framework for the infrastructure serving scientists and other stakeholders in Europe and outside Europe for long-term deep water observation and investigation. This framework will enable the deployment of the infrastructure and its long-term management. EMSO PP is coordinated by INGV (Italy) http://www.emso-eu.org.

ESONET and EMSO are closely working together towards a common objective: preparing the deep sea observatories implementation in Europe.
