EMSO - Description

EMSO Infrastructure represents the missing elements to provide real time access on the selected sites around European coastline with :

bulletFuture deep-sea cables for high resolution data sampling in real time
bulletJunction boxes
bulletDevelopment of common basic sensors
bulletOn shore stations
bulletObservatories gathered in a network
bullet

Development of data infrastructure and sharing under information standards and INSPIRE Directive, with experience gained under SeaDataNet

It is proposed to implement EMSO on 5 selected sites to address specific topics

bulletGobal change and anthropogenic impacts on very specific deep water habitats, including coral reefs : Porcupine / Celtic site
 
bulletGeohazards near dense human habitation areas, and testing marine sea-floor and bore-hole installations : Ligurian Sea Site
 
bulletHydrothermal vents and geo-biosphere interactions : Mid Atlantic Ridge site (MoMAR)
 
bulletClimate Change and natural eco-system habitats in a region of high biodiversity: The Artic site
 
bulletFluid flow outbursts in colds seeps and associated gas hydrate (risk of methane release related to climate change) : The Norwegian site (Hakon Mosby Mud Volcanoe)
