Work Package Description
WP4 will fund and coordinate real sea scale experiments at sites of high scientific interest involving components of the observatory designs developed for ESONET nodes, including data and energy transmission systems at cabled and non-cabled observatory sites. WP4 will also coordinate joint research activities related to the preparation, and subsequent debriefing, data analysis and interpretation of these demonstration missions.

Demonstration missions will be planned according to a selection procedure started by the issue of a ‘Call for proposals’. WP4 first task will be to issue this Call and promote it within the network. WP4 will then manage the evaluation process, and moderate discussions of submitted projects at the “All regions Workshop”.

The WP4 will take in charge the following tasks:

Task a) Call for proposal

	Preparation of the draft of the call and circulation to the 3 NoE Councils for amendment if required and approval.
	Issue of the Call.
	Presentation and promotion of the Call at General Assembly.
	Receipt of the proposals and relay to members of the 3 councils and to external reviewers for evaluation.
	Management of the discussions of proposals at "All Regions workshop".
	Starting of the implementation of demonstration missions after the receipt of the Steering Committee decisions on successful proposals.

Task b) Follow-up of demonstrations

	Start the following-up of the Demonstration Missions (mostly after month 18).
	Management of the Workshop on Demonstration Missions, also jointly with All Regions Workshops n°2.

Past and running activities

A first call for missions has been opened in 2007 (but closed now!) for a preliminary step of sea observatories demonstrations. In the Framework of ESONET NoE they will support some networking tasks:

- validation of interoperability, of deployment & maintenance procedures for different tools,

- qualification of subsystems before a final deployment,

- test and quality control procedures in real time and real data.

12 proposals in competition amongst 11 possible sites

Start in January 2008 for one year.
